Life can sometimes take us on some painful twists and turns. Often those who are closest to us can give us the greatest pain. So where do we turn during those times? Are you living in a cave these days – experiencing the blues – like Elijah did? You don’t have to sit alone in the darkness ever again. Call on him, open his Word, and let a still, small voice speak to you. You are not alone. God is with us, just as he was with Elijah.

The Value of a Human Being
The Christian faith has taught us in western civilization the value of the human being. If we lose the power of this teaching, we see how cheap life really is. Examples of how insignificant people can be in the minds of those outside of Christ are slavery, the Holocaust, and terrorism. Join us this week as we learn about the importance Jesus placed on the human being.

On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”
The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath days from what bound her?”
When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

Making Christ Fit
Jesus described himself as the Good Shepherd, willing to give up his life for us, his flock. However, he also tells us that he came to bring fire on earth and division in a family. In this week’s sermon we will try to fit these words into a lifestyle designed to be positive and comforting.
Scripture: Luke 12:49-56
“I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain, and it does. And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?”

At a church meeting a very wealthy man rose to tell the rest of those present about his Christian faith.
“I’m a millionaire,” he said, “and I attribute it all to the rich blessings of God in my life. I remember that turning point in my faith. I had just earned my first dollar and I went to a church meeting that night. The speaker was a missionary who told about his work. I knew that I only had a dollar bill and had to either give it all to God's work or nothing at all. So at that moment I decided to give my whole dollar to God. I believe that God blessed that decision, and that is why I am a rich man today.”
He finished and there was an awed silence at his testimony as he moved toward his seat. As he sat down a little old lady sitting in the same pew leaned over and said to him: “I dare you to do it again.”

We Shape Our Eternal Destiny
We shape our own future. But what about our eternal destiny? What must we do to be ready to die? The kingdoms of this world will not last, and one day death will come to us all as well. In this week’s sermon, Jesus will help us understand how we should prepare to meet him in death.
Scripture: Luke 12:32-40
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. See your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

The Safest Place to Be
1. Avoid riding in automobiles, because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.
2. Do not stay home, because 17% of all accidents occur in the home.
3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks, because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.
4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water, because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transportation.
5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals. So, above all else, avoid hospitals.
You will be pleased to learn that only .01% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place to be at any given point in time is at church! And Bible study is safe too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less.
So for safety’s sake, attend church and read your Bible.

Beware of Greed! It Can Destroy You!
We are taught to work hard all our lives to provide a good life for our family. Is this where we find our security? While Jesus does not speak against being a responsible citizen, he does warn us against covetousness and greed. In this week’s sermon we will talk about a security that continues even after our last breath has been drawn.
Scripture: Luke 12:13-21
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed: a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

Money is God’s gift, and it brings us many blessings. However, it can also become a curse. Money can easily become our god. He will guide us in the use of our money so that it may be a blessing and not a curse.

A tea manufacturer wanted a new advertising gimmick, so the senior creative man at the advertising agency decided to see if he could persuade a popular evangelist to make a TV commercial. We’ll give you one hundred thousand pounds for a ten second commercial, the ad man told the evangelist. All you have to say is, “Give us this day our daily tea.”
I’m sorry,” replied the evangelist, “but I can’t do that.”
“Five hundred thousand,” offered the ad man.
“I’m afraid not,” said the evangelist solemnly.
“All right. One million pounds. And that’s our very last offer.” But still the evangelist refused.
On his way back, the disappointed ad man turned to his secretary and said: “It’s odd that the evangelist refused to do a commercial for tea. I wonder how much the bread people are giving him.”

Hearing the Word
Do you set aside time each day to speak to God and let him speak to you in his Word? In this week’s sermon we will talk about two women whom Jesus visited, their differing reactions to his visit, and how we can apply this story to our lives.

She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered. “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

During a sermon one Sunday, two teenage girls were heard in the back giggling and disturbing people. The pastor interrupted his sermon and announced sternly, “There are two of you here who have not heard a word I’ve said!” That quieted them down.
When the service was over, the pastor went to greet people at the front door. Three adults apologized for going to sleep in church, promising it would never happen again.

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered. “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

God Is . . . Life
Life is made up of good choices and not-so-good choices. Some lead to life, while others lead to dead ends. In this week’s sermon, we’re going to look at a Psalm our Heavenly Father composed to help us make good, life-giving choices. Find out what wisdom God’s Word offers us.
Scripture: Psalm 1
Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.
Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

There he paid the penalty for our sins and opened the way for a relationship with God as we entrust our lives to Jesus Christ. When a person enters into that relationship with Christ, Paul tells us, the treasures of wisdom and knowledge become available to us.

The husband responded, “When we were first married we came to an agreement. I would make all the major decisions and my wife would make all the minor decisions. And in 60 years of marriage we have never needed to make a major decision.”
